This highlight refers to a recent publication that overviews the role of HLA genes predisposing to autoimmune disease in shaping the pathogenic immune response to autoantigens. The review has been inspired by a study from the same research group (Pisapia et al. J Autoimmun. 2016 Jun;70:63-72. doi: 10.1016/j.jaut.2016.03.016), that described novel findings on the differential expression of HLA class II alleles associated to celiac disease risk. The present review  discusses the correlation of HLA gene expression and regulation with the magnitude of inflammatory responses in celiac disease, type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

These two studies published in a high rank journal have been funded by the MIUR PNR 2011-2013 Flagship InterOmics 2017 (MoHLACeDi), and InterOmics 2015 (RiCeDi) coordinated by Dr Gianfrani of IBP-CNR with the collaboration of Dr Del Pozzo of IGB-CNR.
